Stemming from ancient Chinese medicine, acupuncture involves fine needles being inserted into specific points of the body, for therapeutic purposes.
It is based on the belief that there is energy flowing through the body, known as Qi – when this flows freely the person is thought to be healthy. If there is any blockage or disturbance to the flow of Qi then this can cause illness. It is thought that acupuncture can restore the flow of Qi and promote health and wellbeing.
Western medical acupuncture is based on scientific research which shows needles can stimulate nerves under the skin and in muscle tissue. The body also responds to the needle by producing natural substances, such as endorphins and serotonin. These are known to control pain, decrease inflammation and promote recovery.
What to expect at Back2Balance
During an acupuncture session the therapist inserts needles into specific areas of the body called acupuncture points. This aims to relieve pain, improve movement or function, and restore the body’s emotional and physical balance.
Acupuncture doesn’t cause discomfort and is generally very safe. It can cause different sensations, such as aching, tingling or a feeling of warmth. Acupuncture is relaxing and it may make you feel drowsy. If it does affect you in this way we advise you not to drive. If possible have someone come with you for your first appointment.
At Back2Balance we use acupuncture as a complementary therapy to physiotherapy, to relieve acute pain and reduce muscle tension. We commonly use it to tackle headaches, whiplash, lower back pain and arthritis in the knee.
Acupuncture sessions cost £35 for a 30-minute session.
